Choosing Exterior House Cladding: What You Need to Know Before You Begin

Selecting exterior house cladding is a creative process and a crucial step in shaping the overall atmosphere of your outdoor space.

Stone is not just a material. It is a way to materialize your vision of a home that radiates stability and timeless beauty. When planning house cladding, you are not merely changing the façade; you are investing in lasting value.

Here is what you need to know before taking the first step toward transforming your space.

The Magic of Natural Stone for Wall Cladding

Natural stone has the unique ability to transform an ordinary structure into an architectural statement. By using natural stone for wall cladding, you introduce character that no artificial material can replicate.

Cladding a house with natural stone is not only an aesthetic decision but also a structural one that affects durability, maintenance, and property value for decades to come.

More and more homeowners are choosing stone cladding because they want a façade that appears stable, natural, and resistant to time. However, before you begin, there are several important questions to consider.

Why Natural Stone: Value and Sustainability in Numbers

Choosing natural stone for wall cladding is a strategic investment. The data shows:

Market Value: Natural stone façades can increase property market value by 5% to 8%.

Energy Efficiency: Due to its high thermal mass, stone acts as a natural insulator, reducing cooling costs by up to 35.9% compared to lightweight construction systems.

Longevity: The life cycle of natural stone exceeds 100 years with minimal maintenance.

Technical Requirements: Installation According to Weight and Height

To ensure the “magic” of stability, installation must follow strict engineering rules:

Weight and Thickness: The average density of stone is approximately 3000 kg/m³. For slabs up to 2 cm thick, the weight per square meter is around 55 kg, requiring a structurally sound and dust-free substrate.

Height Limitations: The standard recommendation for adhesive-only installation (without mechanical anchoring) for thin cladding (2–3 cm thick) is generally up to 3 meters in height.

Mechanical Fixing: For cladding above 6 meters in height or when using stone weighing more than 73 kg/m², stainless steel mechanical anchors are mandatory. This ensures gravity does not compromise façade integrity over time.

Architectural Principles for Timeless Design

Harmony between the building and its surroundings is essential. Key architectural principles include:

Visual Grounding: Traditionally, heavier and rougher stones are installed at the base (plinth) to create a sense of stability, while finer textures are suitable for upper levels.

Movement Control: On large surfaces, expansion joints are essential to absorb structural movement and thermal expansion, preventing cracking.

Context and Scale: The size of stone elements must correspond to the scale of the building. For smaller façades, tight installation emphasizes horizontal lines, making the structure appear wider and more grounded.

1. What Type of House Cladding Are You Planning?

Ideally together with your architect, determine whether you prefer:

  • Full façade cladding

  • Accent wall cladding

  • Plinth or fence cladding

  • Combination with plaster or wood

Many house cladding ideas look impressive in photos, but not every concept is suitable for a specific climate, exposure, or structure.

2. Which Natural Stone Is Suitable?

Material selection depends on:

  • Thickness and weight

  • Surface finish (split-face, machine-cut, polished)

  • Water absorption and freeze-thaw resistance

  • Color stability

Exterior cladding materials must withstand temperature fluctuations, moisture, and UV exposure.

3. What Should the Substrate Be?

One of the most common mistakes in wall cladding is underestimating the base. Suitable substrates include:

  • Concrete

  • Brick

  • Properly executed plaster

When thermal insulation is present, additional reinforcement with mesh and mechanical anchors is required.

4. How Much Does Cladding Weigh?

Natural stone cladding typically weighs between 35 and 70 kg per square meter, depending on thickness.

This means:

  • Proper substrate design

  • Correct adhesive selection

  • In some cases, mechanical fixing

Understanding the physical characteristics of the materials ensures safety and durability.

Technical Weight Table (Summary)

Thickness Example Approx. Weight Application
1.2 cm Travertine tiles 24–27 kg/m² Lightweight façade cladding
1–2 cm Small-format gneiss 26–53 kg/m² Durable, low water absorption
2 cm Granite tiles 52–60 kg/m² High-load areas
2–3 cm Large gneiss slabs 53–80 kg/m² Standard exterior cladding
3–5 cm Caps & corner masonry 81–135 kg/m² Massive plinths & architectural elements

Additional Technical Information

  • Water Absorption: Rhodope (Ivaylovgrad) gneiss has extremely low porosity (~0.49%) and excellent frost resistance.

  • Adhesion Standards: According to EN 1348, bonding strength must be at least 0.8 N/mm² (normal conditions) and 0.7 N/mm² after freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Thermal Expansion: Always provide joints (minimum 2–5 mm) or expansion joints every 4–6 meters.

  • Density: Gneiss ≈ 2660 kg/m³; Travertine ≈ 2100–2700 kg/m³.

5. What Adhesive Should Be Used?

For exterior cladding, use flexible cement adhesive class C2TES1.

This provides:

  • High adhesion

  • Elasticity during temperature changes

  • Freeze resistance and prevention of efflorescence

This is not an area for compromise.

6. Are Joints Necessary?

Yes.

Joints compensate for linear expansion and prevent cracking. Eliminating them significantly increases risk.

7. Should You Order Extra Material?

Yes.

A minimum of 10% overage is recommended to account for:

  • Edge cutting

  • Technical tolerances

  • Natural color variations

8. Is Impregnation Necessary?

For exterior cladding, impregnation is recommended.

It:

  • Reduces water absorption

  • Protects against stains

  • Simplifies maintenance

AKEMI recommends façade impregnation every 5–10 years depending on exposure.

9. What Should You Expect from Natural Stone?

Natural stone is not factory-uniform.

Expect:

  • Color variations

  • Texture differences

  • Dimensional tolerances of ±3 mm

10. Why Does Stone Cladding Increase Property Value?

Market observations show:

  • Stone façades are perceived as more durable

  • They visually convey stability

  • They reduce repainting needs

Stone cladding is a long-term investment, not a temporary decorative layer.

ESG Perspective: Why Natural Stone Meets Modern Standards

Environmental

  • Concrete production accounts for ~8% of global CO₂ emissions.

  • Natural stone has significantly lower embodied carbon (≈64 kg CO₂e per ton for sandstone).

  • 100% recyclable and reusable.

  • High thermal mass improves energy efficiency.

Social

  • No VOC emissions.

  • Creates connection to nature and cultural continuity.

Governance

  • Used in LEED Gold certified buildings (e.g., Frankfurt Opera Tower).

  • Up to 50% lower maintenance costs over 100 years.

Natural stone combines visual depth, texture, and organic connection with the environment: qualities many homeowners seek whether for urban homes or vacation properties.

Every home is a canvas for the future. Choosing natural stone is not merely cladding a façade. It is materializing ideas into long-lasting architectural value.

7 installation methods for frost-resistant porcelain tiles: Guidelines

Everything about installing sintered stone: Sintered stone (frost-resistant porcelain tiles) is a material with lasting value that combines technological performance with natural aesthetics. To ensure it endures over time, choosing the right installation method is just as important as the material itself. Key highlights of the guide: 7 installation methods: from easy dry-laying on grass, gravel, or sand for garden pathways, through classic bonding to a screed (the only option for vehicle traffic), to modern raised-floor systems and ventilated façade solutions.
