Don’t choose pool tiles by colour alone: 5 critical technical tips that can save you costly mistakes

Pool tiles often start as a visual choice. Light or dark. Small or large format. Mosaic or large slab. In reality, however, the right choice begins with the technical characteristics.

A swimming pool is one of the most demanding environments for cladding. Constant water, chlorine, salts, cleaning products, UV rays, temperature changes, wet barefoot walking, structural movement and seasonal load all play a role. That is why the material should not be viewed simply as a “tile”, but as part of a complete system.

Here are the five most important things to check before choosing pool tiles.

1. Check water absorption and resistance to the environment

The first indicator is water absorption. In a swimming pool, it must be very low because the material is in constant contact with water.

In high-class sintered stone, also known as frost-resistant porcelain stoneware, water absorption is below 0.1% against a required limit of 0.5%. This is a strong technical argument: the less water a tile absorbs, the more stable it is in wet and outdoor environments.

But low water absorption is not the only indicator. A swimming pool is a chemically active environment. The water may be treated with chlorine, bromine, active oxygen or salt electrolysis. That is why the tiles must have proven resistance to chemicals, salts and cleaning products.

A good pool tile must be resistant not only to water, but also to the environment in which the water is kept clean. Cheap or unsuitable slabs may change colour, lose their surface layer or become difficult to maintain.

It is important to stress this: low water absorption does not mean that waterproofing can be skipped. Tiles and grout are not a waterproofing system. A professional waterproofing system for swimming pools must be installed underneath them.

2. Do not look only at R10 or R11. In a pool, safety for wet barefoot walking matters

One of the most common mistakes is looking only at the R10 or R11 class. This indicator is important, but it mainly refers to walking with shoes.

In a swimming pool, people walk barefoot on a wet surface. That is why for the pool floor, steps, shallow areas, ramps and coping, it is much more important to look for a standard for wet barefoot walking, such as DIN 51097.

For the 2 cm sintered stone slabs offered by Raimar, the specified class is DIN 51097 A+B+C, as well as R11 according to DIN 51130. This is a strong technical argument for wet areas, pool floors, steps and areas around the pool.

There is an important nuance here. The roughest tile is not always the best solution. Highly textured anti-slip slabs can be safe for wet barefoot walking, but if the surface is too rough, cleaning becomes difficult.

In a swimming pool there is chlorine, salts, cleaning products, organic dirt and calcium deposits. If the relief is too deep, limescale, dirt and cleaning product residues can accumulate in it. This is especially important for the pool floor, steps, coping and overflow zones.

That is why the best choice is a balance: a sufficiently safe anti-slip surface, but with a fine microtexture that allows cleaning with detergents, brushes and pool robots.

If the tile will be used for the pool floor and steps, a “beautiful texture” alone is not enough. There must be a verifiable technical indicator for safety in wet barefoot areas.

3. Choose the size according to the area, not according to the photo

Large slabs look impressive. They create fewer joints, a calmer appearance and a more monolithic result. But in a swimming pool, the largest format is not always the best choice.

For the pool floor and steps, 60×60 cm is the more practical format. It adapts more easily to slopes, drains, openings and details. With larger slabs, the risk of voids behind the tile is higher if the installation is not carried out very precisely.

The general rule is simple: the more complex the geometry, the more practical the smaller format. The flatter and straighter the surface, the better a large format can look.

In pools with radii, curves, small breaks, steps or many openings, large slabs are not always the best solution. In such cases, a smaller format often gives a cleaner and technically safer result.

A larger format reduces the number of joints, but it does not eliminate the need for expansion joints. This is an important distinction. Fewer joints mean a calmer appearance, but structural movement and temperature stress still need to be absorbed by properly positioned elastic joints.

4. The joint is an important technical element. Do not make it “almost invisible”

In a swimming pool, the joint is not a decorative detail. It is a technical element.

Clients often ask for “jointless installation” or a 1 mm joint, especially when they have chosen rectified sintered stone. A rectified tile has very precise edges and allows for a more accurate joint, but this does not mean that it should be installed almost without joints in a swimming pool.

In pools, the joint has a function. It absorbs movement, thermal expansion and stress in the system. This is especially important in outdoor pools, which are filled, emptied, heated by the sun and seasonally cooled.

The minimum joint width is not determined only by how straight the tile is. It is determined by the requirements of the pool system, the size of the slabs, the application area and the operating conditions.

With light tiles and light grout, the choice of adhesive is especially important. White adhesive is the safer solution because it reduces the risk of darkening or unwanted changes in the final colour.

Maintenance starts with the choice of grout. In a swimming pool, the grout is the most sensitive part of the cladding. The more resistant it is to chemicals, water and dirt, the longer the cladding will keep its good appearance.

5. The tile does not work alone. A swimming pool requires a system

Even the best tile can cause problems if the system underneath it is compromised.

In a swimming pool, one must think about the substrate, waterproofing, adhesive, full adhesive coverage, grout, elastic connections, openings, steps, drains and overflow details.

The highest-risk areas are corners, the wall-to-floor connection, steps, openings for nozzles and skimmers, drains and overflow elements. These areas require additional sealing according to the manufacturer’s system.

In pools built in stages, the working joint between the floor and the walls is very important. If the floor and walls are poured separately, a water-stopping system such as a waterstop or swelling strip must be planned at the structural stage.

Coved transitions also help in the wall-to-floor area. A rounded transition at horizontal edges reduces stress in the corner and makes the waterproofing and cladding more reliable.

Why “back-buttering” is not a recommendation, but a necessity

In swimming pools, the adhesive layer must provide full coverage. This means that no air voids should remain between the slab and the substrate.

The “back-buttering” method means applying adhesive both to the substrate and to the back of the slab. The goal is to achieve maximum contact between the slab, the adhesive and the waterproofed substrate.

The reason is that voids behind the tiles are a risk. If water enters them, it can cause problems during freezing, loading and temperature changes. In outdoor pools this is especially important because water expands when it freezes and can cause the cladding to detach.

Voids are also a hygiene issue. Moisture can remain there and cannot be cleaned from the outside. That is why, in a swimming pool, the goal is almost full contact, not simply that “the tile sticks”.

What S1 and S2 mean for adhesives

In swimming pools, especially with large-format slabs, the adhesive must be not only strong, but also deformable.

The S1 designation means deformable adhesive. This means that the adhesive layer can absorb small movements and stresses.

The S2 designation means highly deformable adhesive. It is even more suitable for large formats, more complex areas, thermal stress and critical applications.

For 60×60 cm and 60×120 cm slabs in a swimming pool environment, S1 is often considered the minimum. For larger formats, critical areas and higher requirements, S2 is the safer choice.

Sintered stone or glass mosaic tiles?

Glass mosaic tiles remain a classic solution for swimming pools. They are very suitable for curves, radii, jacuzzis and complex shapes. The small format easily follows curved surfaces.

Sintered stone gives a different result. It creates larger stone surfaces, fewer joints and a calmer architectural look. It is suitable when the aim is a natural stone-like surface, visual continuity between the pool and the surrounding paving, and a more monolithic effect.

With sintered stone, the edges must be planned in advance. On steps and visible edges, a sharp cut edge is not recommended. The minimum is a chamfer. For a higher-end finish, rounding, R-processing or a 45-degree mitered detail can be used.

Why light-coloured tiles are the safer choice

The colour of the tile changes not only the appearance of the pool, but also the feel of the water.

Light beige, sandy, cream and light grey tones make the water look cleaner and calmer. They also heat up less than dark surfaces, which is important around a pool where people often walk barefoot.

SRI also matters here — Solar Reflectance Index. The higher this index, the less the surface heats up in the sun. That is why light slabs are the more practical choice for coping, terraces and paving around water.

The “infinite surface” effect is achieved best with similar or identical slabs inside and around the pool. When the floor, steps, coping and surrounding paving are visually connected, the water looks calmer and the project feels more complete.

The most important principle: safety, cleaning and installation must be considered together

A good pool tile is not simply the roughest, the largest or the lightest. It must combine several conditions at the same time.

In swimming pools, compromises rarely show immediately. They usually appear after the first season, after winter or after several cleaning cycles. That is why the right choice begins with technical questions, not with the photo.

Pool tiles should not be chosen only by colour, photo or size. Good cladding is a combination of low water absorption, proven anti-slip class, chemical resistance, suitable format, resistant grout and a professional installation system.

If the project includes the pool floor and steps, the most important question is safety when walking barefoot on a wet surface. If the project includes large straight walls, a large format can create a very beautiful result. If the pool has curves and complex details, a smaller format is often the safer solution.

The truth is that a good swimming pool begins before choosing the tile with the right questions about the material, the system and the installation.
