Pure white marble is a result of the metamorphism of very pure (low in silicates) limestone or dolomite. The characteristic swirls and veins in the texture of many colored marbles are due to various minerals, sand, iron oxides, quartz, which were originally present in the limestone as layers or granular structures. All these elements were mobilized and recrystallized by the immense pressure and heat during metamorphism.
Since ancient times, white marble has been valued in sculpture for its malleability and resistance to carving. Thanks to the low refractive index of calcite, light penetrates several millimeters into the stone before dispersing, resulting in the characteristic "waxy" luster that brings life to human sculptures made of marble. All Renaissance sculptures by Michelangelo are made of marble, and this has been the favorite stone of all Greek and Roman sculptors and architects. Hardly a coincidence.
The trend to use less processed and artificial materials is stronger than ever. Marble is a truly beautiful, natural product with a reputation for durability, built over centuries. Its specific purity has been admired since ancient times and will continue to be so in the future.
